CDC Warns Clinicians to Watch for H5N1
Jan 18, 2014
On January 15, 2014, AlertsUSA issued the following
Flash message to subscriber mobile devices:
New CDC advisory warns clinicians to consider poss of Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in cases of severe resp illness + recent travel abroad after death
in Alberta.

What You Need To Know
On Wed of this week, AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via text messages to their mobile devices that the CDC had issued an advisory to medical clinicians nationwide warning that consideration should be given to the possibility of an H5N1 bird flu infection in persons meeting the following criteria:
New-onset severe acute respiratory illness requiring hospitalization..
Recently travel abroad to countries where human cases of H5N1 bird flu have been detected, or where the virus is known to be circulating in animals.
These countries include China, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Turkey, Egypt and about 45 others.
The warning comes after the Public Health Agency of Canada reported the first confirmed case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus identified in North America. The patient, a female nurse in Alberta, fell ill while returning from a 3-week trip to Beijing. How she was exposed to the virus remains unknown as she had no contact with poultry during her trip.
Readers may wonder why all the fuss over a single death?
There are a number of reasons, one of which is that according to the World Health Organization, at least 60% of cases classified as H5N1 result in death, and a particularly gruesome one at that. According to the CDC, most reports of H5N1 in humans have described severe illness, including pneumonia leading to respiratory failure, encephalitis, septic shock, internal bleeding, brain inflammation, multi-organ failure and more.
Further, research has shown that a highly contagious strain of H5N1 can be reached in only a few mutations, raising concerns about ...

China Demonstrates Hypersonic Flight
Jan 18, 2014

What You Need To Know
China’s Defense Ministry this week confirmed a report by published in the Washington Free Beacon of the successful test flight of a new hypersonic glide vehicle conducted on Jan. 9. The term hypersonic generally refers speeds between 5 and 10 times the speed of sound, 7,680 miles per hour.
The U.S., China, India and Russia have all conducted research on hypersonic missiles in order to pierce defensive systems not built to intercept such fast moving objects.
U.S. missile defenses are designed to counter hypersonic targets, namely ballistic missile warheads. What is different about the Chinese hypersonic vehicle is that its trajectory does not enter space, making it far more difficult to detect, track, and intercept.
Following reports of the test, three members of the House Armed Services Committee, Chairman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (CA), Rep. Randy Forbes (VA) and Rep. Mike Rogers (AL), issued a joint statement slamming the level of defense budget cuts that Congress has approved.
“While round after round of defense cuts have knocked America’s technological advantage on its back, the Chinese and other competitor nations push towards military parity with the United States; in some cases, as in this one, they appear to be leaping ahead of us."
"This situation does nothing to support peaceful coexistence in the Pacific. We have dithered for three decades now, delaying badly needed replacement equipment for our troops, relying on hardware that was built during the Reagan years."
"The Asia Pacific is fast becoming a powder keg. Allowing nations that do not share our respect for free and open avenues of commerce to gain a strategic advantage over the United States and her allies only brings us closer to lighting the fuse."
U.S. Efforts
The U.S. has been involved in research into hypersonic flight for some time. The most recent publicly acknowledged and discussed effort is the "Falcon Project" (Force Application and Launch from CONtinental United States), a joint undertaking between the Defense Advanced Research projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Air Force. One part of the program aims to ...

The News with Sen. Cruz - January 17, 2014

January 17, 2014
This week, once again, Washington politicians failed to listen to the American people. The Senate passed a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill, and the Majority Leader and Senate Democrats refused to reexamine the detrimental harms many families are facing due to Obamacare. The expansion of federal power and the lawlessness promoted among Senate Democrats and the President must stop.
Just this year, President Obama has delayed the employer mandate by a year, without the approval of Congress. He has chosen to modify enforcement of drug crimes, without the approval of Congress. He has granted legal status to illegal immigrants, without the approval of Congress.
We have had enough. It is time to make D.C. listen. I hope you will keep reading below for an update on my recent efforts to bring the people’s voice to Washington.
All the best,
Ted Cruz
We Should Defund Obamacare and Fund Military Pensions
On Thursday, Sen. Cruz asked for unanimous consent to pass one amendment to prohibit the omnibus spending bill from funding Obamacare, then a second amendment to defund Obamacare and use the funds to restore cuts to military pensions.
"This $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill is outrageous enough, but on top of that it provides direct funding for Obamacare, which is destroying jobs, killing insurance plans, causing premiums to increase and people to lose their doctors. We should defund Obamacare and focus our tax dollars on priorities that help Americans, such as restoring full funding for military pensions for the men and women who protect us. Instead, the Senate squelched any debate over Obamacare and proceeded to pass its trillion dollar spending bill no one has even read. The fact that the Washington establishment is hailing a massive $1 trillion omnibus spending bill as a worthy achievement is exactly what's wrong with our government today."
Chilling Report Concludes Benghazi Attacks Preventable; Families of Victims Deserve the Truth
On Thursday, Sen. Cruz released the following statement on the Senate Select Committee’s Review of the Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Facilities in Benghazi, Libya:
"The majority views of the SSCI report confirm a number of things long suspected about the Benghazi attacks. Our government was warned, and there were steps that could have been taken to protect Americans. But our people were left at significant risk against a known terrorist threat, and when the attack came, there was no help to send. After the attack, the Obama administration tried to mask its failure with false claims of a protest over an Internet video. All the while, the terrorists who carried out this attack are still at large. Most chilling, however, is the conclusion that the attacks were preventable in the first place."
Sen. Cruz Questions Government Surveillance Programs
On Monday, in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Cruz asked witnesses if government surveillance programs have focused too much on gathering information on law-abiding citizens and too little on people who are actually tied to terrorism. Here are a few highlights:
"I think a great many Americans are concerned about the current state of NSA surveillance. I have concerns on two fronts: I am concerned on the one hand that the federal government has not been effective enough monitoring and surveilling bad guys. That we have not succeeded in preventing what should have been preventable terrorist attacks. And that the same time I am concerned that the sweep of the surveillance has been far too broad with respect to law-abiding citizens. And I think a great many Americans would prefer to see that reversed.
"Am I understanding correctly the conclusions that the commissions received, that in your judgment the bulk metadata program has not to date prevented any specific terrorist attack? Is that an accurate understanding?"
Speaking with Shannon Bream on America's News HQ
On Sunday, Sen. Cruz spoke with Shannon Bream about President Obama’s lawlessness. People of all political persuasions should be concerned by the current administration’s disregard for the law, Sen. Cruz said.
Israel has lost a great warrior and the United States has lost a great friend
This week, Sen. Cruz reacted to news of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's passing:
"The story of Ariel Sharon’s life was very much the story of the state of Israel from his birth in Kfar Malal twenty years before Israel was established, to fighting in the Six Days war of 1967, to his service as Prime Minister from 2001-06. He experienced enormous struggle and adversity, but persevered in the defense of the nation he loved. Israel has lost a great warrior and the United States has lost a great friend. May he rest in peace."

Fireworks: Reid Claims Gates Trashed Him “to Make a Buck”

 Daniel Doherty | Jan 17, 2014

Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-NV) pronouncement in 2007 that the Iraq War was “lost” resurfaced recently when Robert Gates called the comment “disgraceful” on national television. To the surprising of no one, Reid fired back in kind:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid bluntly accused former Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday of being "out to make a buck" with a memoir that attacks numerous other officials from President Barack Obama on down.
"He denigrates everybody, everyone, Secretary (of State Hillary Rodham) Clinton, the president, (Vice President) Joe Biden, me."
Among other references, Gates wrote that at one point he wondered if Reid was delusional in calling to speak with him about the vice presidency.
Reid said he has not discussed the book with Obama but has spoken with Biden about it. "We just lamented how disappointed we were," he said. "It's obvious it's to sell a book."
The Nevada Democrat said in brief comments in his Capitol office that he hasn't read the book and doesn't intend to, but knows what Gates wrote from conversations with others. "I'm surprised he would in effect denigrate everybody he came in contact with in an effort to make a buck," he said.
Maybe. Or perhaps he wanted to write a serious and honest account of all that happened -- as well as an accurate portrayal of those with whom he worked -- during his four and half years at the Department of Defense? Might that be a better explanation? As Gates said in response to Reid’s outburst, he does praise many of his colleagues, including Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden -- although he serves up some biting criticism as well. But it seems out of character that Gates would “denigrate everybody,” as Reid opines, merely to “make a buck.” He presumably took a huge pay cut after tendering his resignation as the college president at Texas A&M University to serve in the Bush administration. So if money was his chief -- or only -- concern, why on earth leave that cushy job in the first place? The title of his memoir might provide an answer.
I think Gates wrote exactly how he felt when the Senate Majority Leader made those regrettable comments, and Reid is now smearing his character to save face. A guy who served eight different presidents doesn’t strike me as someone who would foolishly and needlessly make outrageous claims to sell books. And incidentally, I suspect he wasn’t the only public servant offended by Harry Reid’s defeatism and callousness that day.

Obama To Pave Way For 30,000 Syrian Islamists To “Resettle” In America..

In a shocking move that makes counter-terrorism measures worthless, the Obama Administration is working to secure the “resettling” of some 30,000 Syrian Islamists within the United States.
Syria’s civil war has displaced thousands of people. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that thousands of Syrians need new countries of residence, and the International Rescue Committee is making sure this happens. With this, the IRC made the audacious statement through Vice President for Public Policy Sharon Waxman, calling on the “US and other countries to open their doors to vulnerable Syrian refugees and notes that resettlement must be an integral part of the humanitarian response.” Forget all counter-terrorism measures that are put into place for the protection of this country. The Muslim Obama Administration will make sure that Syrian Islamists have a new home in America, that no jihadi will be turned away.

500595401001295640360noThe gates of Hell have been opened, thanks to President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, and radical progressives across the country. In successfully working to end “racial” profiling, albeit Muslim profiling, the next move is to secure the “settlement” of 30,000 Syrian Islamists within the United States. It won’t be done all at once, but if Obama and his minions of Muslim lovers have there way, at least 30,000 Islamists, and many more, will be calling America their home. For a President that has so openly supported Al-Qaeda in Syria recently, this is their open invitation to make a permanent home in the U.S., all under the guise of a “humanitarian outreach.”
The Wall Street Journal article, which was published on January 10, 2014 and written by Miriam Jordan reports:
U.S. plans to resettle thousands of Syrians displaced by their country’s civil war could hinge on those refugees receiving exemptions from laws aimed at preventing terrorists from entering the country.
A U.S. official stated publicly for the first time this week that some of the 30,000 especially vulnerable Syrians the United Nations hopes to resettle by the end of 2014 will be referred to the U.S. for resettlement.
