Flag Day: The power of those broad stripes and bright stars

What would life be like without symbols? We often use simple pictures to show complex ideas, with something small representing something big. Wedding rings mean marriage. Mobile phone icons lead to us take action. Flags represent nations.
Americans observe Flag Day each year on June 14, the day when the Continental Congress first issued the U.S. Flag in 1777. This year’s Flag Day is extra special because 2014 also the 200th anniversary year of The Star-Spangled Banner, our national anthem written by Francis Scott Key, a Maryland attorney. The U.S. Flag, America’s most recognizable symbol, inspired Key to write his famous song’s lyrics.

Flag Day special because it gives us a chance to fly our flag, which is not only our nation’s top symbol but also the inspiration for our official top song.
But it was another set of broad stripes that initially worried him. The British military had burned the U.S. Capitol and White House on August 24, 1814, during the War of 1812. Americans, both pro and anti-war, feared that British forces would try conquer other cities and force America to become part of England again. The editors of the Federal Republican-Georgetown, Key’s hometown anti-war newspaper, issued a call to action on September 1, 1814: “Unless the country is to be abandoned by the people . . . that every man should awake, arouse, and prepare for action.”
That same day Key learned that the British military had captured his friend, Dr. William Beanes. While Key had opposed the War of 1812, he desperately wanted to rescue his friend. Gaining permission from President James Madison, he set out by boat with John Skinner, the US prisoner of war negotiator, from Baltimore to find the British fleet and negotiate for Dr. Beanes.
The broad stripes that first greeted Key on September 7, 1814, however, were hardly glorious to him. When he came upon the British fleet, he likely saw the Union Jack, Britain’s national flag.
By combining the crosses of England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, this banner showed centralized royal power. Running across the center was a broad red stripe, which represented the single sovereign reigning over them. Another bold red stripe ran vertically to form a cross, suggesting Christianity as the crown’s authority.
Key was loyal to a different set of broad stripes, ones that symbolized representation, not royalty. Years earlier on June 14, 1777, the first Flag Day, the Continental Congress created America’s first symbol, depicting the union of thirteen colonies turned into states. Congress wrote: “That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white.”
A few years later in 1782, Congress defined the colors when it created the symbolic US seal, which features an eagle. They defined red as hardiness and valor. White stood for innocence and purity, while blue meant vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
Key knew that his flag held deep symbolic meaning as he stepped aboard the British flagship of Admiral Alexander Cochrane on September 7, 1814. Cochrane invited Key and Skinner to dine with him. Though he and another British officer agreed to free Dr. Beanes, they wouldn’t let Key, Skinner, or Beanes depart until after the British attacked Baltimore. “Ah, Mr. Skinner, after discussing so freely our preparation and plans, you could hardly expect us to let you go on shore in advance of us?” Cochrane explained.
Surrounded by Union Jacks for days, Key, Skinner, and Beanes stayed with the British fleet. Key was worried about Baltimore. “To make my feelings still more acute, the admiral had intimated his fears that the town [Baltimore] must be burned, and I was sure that if taken it would have been given up to plunder . . . It was filled with women and children.”
Starting on September 13, for more than twenty-four hours, Key watched the British Navy bombard Fort McHenry, which guarded Baltimore’s harbor. The staccato sound of rockets and bombs suddenly stopped the morning of September 14. Gone from the fort was its small storm flag.
Through his spyglass, Key must have held his breath during the silence as he wondered what would happen next. Would the Union Jack or a white flag of surrender appear at the top of Fort McHenry? Relief swept through him as he saw the giant thirty by forty-two foot U.S. flag soar to the top of Fort McHenry. While the men at the fort played Yankee Doodle, Key’s emotions took flight. Phrases such as “O say can you see” and “by the dawn’s early light” pulsed through his heart and pen. By the time he returned to Baltimore two days later, he’d written lyrics for a poem, The Star-Spangled Banner. Key’s genius is that his words were so inspirational, they could be applied to many generations and situations, not only to Fort McHenry and Baltimore. Though he didn’t know it at the time, Key had given the land of the free its anthem for the ages.
Flag Day special because it gives us a chance to fly our flag, which is not only our nation’s top symbol but also the inspiration for our official top song. Life would be less meaningful without symbols like our flag and songs like our national anthem to inspire us.

He still needs a podium, teleprompters, lights, black boxes, and the secret service guy in back to be on the look-out for any terrorist type 8-year-olds with Tea Partying parents.

Here's what the last guy needed.

Dear Friend,

America's veterans bravely put themselves in harm's way to defend our freedoms. Once our veterans return home they should never have to worry about receiving the benefits they have earned. This week the Department of Veterans Affairs released an audit detailing alarming numbers of American veterans who are not receiving the care they have so fully earned. As your representative in the United States House of Representatives, I am working every day to ensure our veterans and their wellbeing is a priority.

The audit released this week proves that problems with the VA go well beyond a patient backlog. According to the audit, 57,000 veterans have been waiting more than 90 days for their first VA appointment. Worse yet, the audit found that 64,000 veterans have fallen through the cracks completely and never received an appointment with a VA doctor after requesting one. This is a national disgrace and our veterans deserve better. The audit also found that some VA schedulers were told by their superiors to falsify appointment schedules to make patient wait times appear shorter. This is unacceptable.

The men and women who have served in our military deserve more from the VA. Veterans who have defended our freedoms and values at home and abroad should be not forced to wait for months to see a doctor. If any veteran in the Eighth District is having a problem with the VA, I encourage them to contact one of my district offices so we can help. My staff and I work every day to ensure our veterans get the care they have earned and deserve.

This week the House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill that I sponsored, the Veterans Access to Care Act which will give veterans who are forced to wait for VA healthcare access to private care providers. This common sense legislation is long overdue. The Veterans Access to Care Act would require the VA to offer private healthcare services to any veteran who cannot get an appointment within VA wait time goals - currently 14 days - or who lives more than 40 miles from a VA medical facility. Additionally, the bill would ban bonuses for all VA employees through 2016. Bureaucrats at the VA should not be getting financial bonuses while veterans are being forced to wait months to see a doctor.

The Department of Veterans Affairs needs real reforms. While the Veterans Access to Care Act will not fix all that is broken within the VA, it is an important first step to make healthcare accessible for America's veterans. No one who served our nation in uniform should have to worry about waiting months to see a doctor. I will continue working in the House of Representatives to keep the promises made to our veterans and honor their service to our nation. We must always honor the sacrifices of our military members.
I had a beautiful visit to Dawt Mill in Ozark County during our Tourism Week.

I visited Ava Drug to see the old-fashioned soda fountain on our MO-08 Tourism Week Tour. You can still get an ice cream cone for 10 cents!
I enjoyed touring the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home and Museum in Mansfield over the weekend.
It was a pleasure to speak at the Black River Electric Cooperative's Annual Meeting last weekend. I addressed the EPA's attempts to raise electric rates on all Missourians through costly new rules and regulations, and my efforts to stop them.
I had fun getting to know Grayson, Mercade, and Ellen representing the New Madrid FFA. They drove all the way out from Missouri to visit my Washington office. I loved my days in the Salem FFA and hope they have the same wonderful experience I had!

As President Obama continues to make terrible decisions that are either in or out of line with our country's laws and that seem to put American citizens into ever growing danger both here and abroad, many voices are rising up in a compelling way - and using the dreaded "I" word.

Here are but two.

Iraq Disintegrates, U.S. Could Strike Within Days
June 14, 2014
Between June 11-12 , 2014, AlertsUSA issued the following
related Flash messages to subscriber mobile devices:
6/12 POTUS responds to Iraq request for "kinetic support", says US ready to take military action. US Embassy Baghdad preparing evacuation contingencies. Monitoring..
6/11 Iraqi gov gives approval for US airstrikes on al Qaeda targets in country, US offers mil assist in Turkey's efforts to recover kidnapped Mosul

What You Need To Know
Rebels from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) (AKA Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham, AKA Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant - ISIL), a jihadist group so completely lunatic and out of control that they were actually expelled from Al Qaeda's global network in February of this year, have overrun Iraqi government forces and now control major swaths of territory equating to about 1/4 to 1/3rd of the country. Included in this area is Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city with a population of over 1.5 million, as well as Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's former hometown. As of the time of this reports preparation late Friday, ISIS rebels had advanced to within 30 miles of the capital of Baghdad.
UK media outlets are reporting that roads in the conquered areas are lined with the bodies of executed and beheaded police and soldiers and that thousands of others have been taken prisoner (see videos here and here).
The massive U.S. Embassy is Baghdad is executing plans for a possible evacuation and hundreds of non-essential personnel, contractors and U.S. military advisers have already left the country, with more on the way.
The Turkish consulate in Mosul was also overrun with more than 3 dozen diplomats and embassy workers kidnapped. Turkey, a NATO member, has called for an emergency meeting of the alliance and the U.S. has offered military assistance to help Turkey recover the staff. The Turkish parliament has given their military authorization to conduct unlimited military operations in the country until at least October.
On Thursday of this week Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina called for U.S. air strikes on ISIS rebels and urged the Obama administration to immediately withdraw U.S. embassy staff in Baghdad to prevent "another Benghazi incident. Senator Graham made his appeal moments after he left a top-secret Senate Armed Services Committee briefing within which he was told information about the extremists that he says "scared the hell" out of him.

Perhaps it is within this briefing that he learned that along with overrunning a number of Iraqi military bases and installations, ISIS rebels also took control of massive arms depots containing all manner of offensive weaponry stockpiled by the U.S. for the new Iraqi army, reportedly including a number of Blackhawk and Kiowa helicopters, personnel and equipment transports and more.
This may also be briefing where he received further confirmation that many of the ISIS rebels on the offensive in Iraq were actually trained and equipped by the U.S. over the last several years for the proxy war being fought in Syria.
“I will work with Congress to ramp up support for those in the Syrian opposition [ i.e. rebels ] who offer the best alternative to terrorists and brutal dictators..."

And in a stunning development, late this week the government of Iran offered to partner with the U.S. in helping Iraq fight back. Iranian officials have told Reuters that the country will send advisers and weaponry, but probably not troops, though there are already widespread reports of several battalions of Iranian troops already on the ground.
Friday afternoon President Obama stated that the United States "will not be sending U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq," but that he would be reviewing a range of other options to support the Iraqi government against a sweeping advance by militant fighters. He went on to say that any decision on U.S. military support for Iraq "is going to take several days," adding that "this is not going to happen overnight." Within minutes of his announcement, sources within the defense community indicated that U.S. air strikes could start as soon as Saturday.
Iraq War 3.0?
AlertsUSA Threat Journal warns readers that this situation will likely dramatically worsen in the coming weeks as fighting spreads and more Islamists pour into the country from across the region. Currently the conflict involves extremely well armed, well funded rebel fighters clashing with and military units from Syria, Iraq and Iran. This week ISIS issued direct threats to attack Jordan and fighting in Syria has already encroached on the border of Israel.
One thing is for certain: It highly unlikely that the U.S. and NATO, not to mention other regional countries, are going to sit idly by and let Iraq, particularly with it's 5th largest oil and gas reserves in the world, slip permanently out of reach.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor developments in the region and will immediately notify service subscribers of changes in the overall threat environment, or additional U.S. involvement, as events warrant.

U.S. B2 Spirit Stealth Bomber - ALLOW IMAGES
Russia Warns U.S. and NATO,
Sends Strategic Bombers to West Coast
June 14, 2014
Between June 9-13 , 2014, AlertsUSA issued the following
related Flash messages to subscriber mobile devices:
6/9 Russia warns US after deployment of strategic bombers, says further expansion of NATO forces near borders to be viewed as "demonstration of hostile intentions."
6/13 USGOV issues travel alert for Russian Fed due to Ukraine violence. Warns of poss anti-US actions and urges low profile and extreme caution in border areas.
What You Need To Know
Following the initial deployment of B-52 bombers to England late last week, the Pentagon followed up this week with the first ever deployment of B-2 stealth bombers to the region. The moves came as the U.S. and NATO launched military exercises in the Baltics. In response, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov issued a statement that Moscow will respond if NATO continues to build up forces on Russia’s borders;
This week NATO launched two major military exercise in the Baltic region. The first, known as Sabre Strike, spans multiple locations in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and involves thousands of personnel from 10 countries. Also underway is the major naval exercise known as BALTOPS, which is the largest, multinational exercise taking place in the Baltic region this year and involves maritime forces from 12 countries.
Shortly after the start of these exercise, the Russian military launched their own surprise war games just across the border in the Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania known as Kaliningrad involving first strike forces, marines, paratroopers, bombers, heavy fighter jets and two dozen warships from the Russian Baltic Fleet.
Additionally, just as the U.S. deployed B-52 and B-2 stealth bombers to the region, Russia responded by sending their own nuclear-capable strategic bombers to the U.S.. NORAD has confirmed that four Russian strategic bombers triggered U.S. air defense systems while conducting practice bombing runs near Alaska early this week, with two of the Tu-95 Bear H aircraft coming within 50 miles of the coast of Northern California.
Retired U.S. Air Force General Thomas McInerney, who himself served as commander of 11th Air Force in Alaska, is quoted in print media outlets as saying he could not remember single a case of Russian strategic bombers coming this close to the U.S. coast – even at the height of the Cold War.
Rep. Mike Conaway (R., Texas), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, called the Russian flights “intentional provocations.”
Readers are reminded that the incursion of the bombers comes just weeks after a Russian Su-27 interceptor jet flew dangerously close to a U.S. RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft near Japan. In that incident, the Su-27 jet flew close to the RC-135, turned to reveal its air-to-air missiles to the crew, and then flew to within 100 feet of the cockpit in a maneuver military officials called reckless.
As always, AlertsUSA continues to closely monitor developments in this increasingly tense region and will immediately notify service subscribers of changes in the overall threat environment as events warrant.

LIVE VIDEO: Cliff-dangling Texas mansion to be torched - WATCH LIVE TILL OVER

(NEWSER) – What's worse than having your luxury home fall into a lake? How about having your home fall into a lake and then having to pay for an expensive cleanup using specialized barges? To avoid this fate, the owners of a Texas home on the verge of toppling into Lake Whitney plan to torch their mansion this morning, reports the Waco Herald. The owners have hired a demolition firm to burn the home and then pull the debris back with an excavator to minimize damage to the lake. Firefighters and emergency medical services will be standing by. "Like any cliffhanger, I guess we're all watching and waiting, you know," a neighbor says.

What, Me Worry?

By Jim ONeill

The Left is a religion. It looks away from the obvious sins of its leaders the way earlier generations of churchgoers sometimes averted their gaze from the misdeeds of their own.
That doesn’t mean the Left can’t change. It only signifies that the shift, when it comes, will be no ordinary change of mind. It will be more akin to a Pauline conversion than a matter of fact acknowledgment of a mistake.
...Revolutions, even mild ones, eat their own. The time for liberals to realize that is early, before the train makes the thundering turn into that long, long stretch of track—the one that culminates in a ravine.—Richard Fernandez “A Sudden Realization
“Barack Obama is really the president Richard Nixon always wanted to be…he’s been allowed to act unilaterally in a way that we’ve fought for decades.”—Jonathan Turley
“...governments will use whatever technology is available to them to combat their primary enemy—which is their own population.”—Noam Chomsky

Although by this point I should  know better, it still  surprises me that liberals so consistently fail to connect the dots between cause and effect. Liberals, who are justifiably renowned for their blithe obliviousness to “unintended consequences,” are often shocked when the agendas that they superciliously promote turn around and bite them on the butt. That would all be well and good I suppose, and perhaps worthy of a bemused chuckle or two—but unfortunately, those of us who knew better all along end up getting bit as well.
(In fairness, I should mention the radical leftists—of both the communist and fascist variety—who have long been intentionally trying to overwhelm and destroy capitalism/Western Culture via the Cloward/Piven strategy and innumerable other ploys. Their nefarious activities muddy the waters around the issue of liberal overreach).
In any event, the other day I read an article with the rather unwieldy title: ”Liberal Austin Homeowners Surprised to Find They Have to Pay All the Taxes They Voted For.” The article centers around the absurdity of liberals being upset about paying for public works that they were primarily responsible for voting into existence in the first place, (“What…the Tooth Fairy isn’t going to pay for this?”). As I say, the whole “cause and effect” thing seems to fly right by them.
I was reminded of this liberal peculiarity when I read a recent article by liberal icon Noam Chomsky, in which he (quite correctly) notes that “the constitutional lawyer in the White House [that would be Obama] seems determined to demolish the foundations of our civil liberties.” Just so.
I am a firm advocate of Henry David Thoreau’s axiom “that government is best that governs least.” Liberals, who believe “that government is best that governs most,” should not be surprised at the tyrannical tone-deaf nature of the beast that they have built—what else did they expect?
I suspect that even now most liberals remain blissfully unaware of the wretched end that awaits “we the people” if we continue feeding the voracious and insatiable hunger of a bloated government

Cover-up Scandal: CDC’s Vaccine Research Exposed as Flawed and Falsified

2014-06-12 08:38:20-04
Just months after U.S. Congressman Bill Posey compared the Center for Disease Control (CDC)’s vaccine safety studies to the SEC’s Bernie Madoff scandal, malfeasance in the CDC’s studies of thimerosal-containing vaccines has, for the first time, been documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature. Dr. Boyd Haley, international expert in mercury toxicity and a co-author of the recently published paper said “There is no doubt that authorities in the CDC have initiated and participated in a cover-up of vaccine-induced damage from thimerosal to our children----and this I consider criminal. The paper, "Methodological Issues and Evidence of Malfeasance in Research Purporting to Show Thimerosal in Vaccines is Safe," was published on June 6 and contains eight pages of evidence that the CDC has had knowledge of the vaccine preservative’s neurological risks, yet continues to cover them up.

Mumps Vaccine Proves Ineffective as Outbreaks Among Fully Vaccinated Increase

2014-06-12 09:06:23-04
Americans are vaccinated against mumps through the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) shot, which is also one of the more dangerous vaccinations. But in the early 2000s, researchers began to notice an alarming pattern: those vaccinated against mumps were still becoming ill with it—at alarming rates. This worrisome trend is accelerating: in April 2014, the New Jersey Department of Health warned of an outbreak of mumps at the Stevens Institute of Technology. Eight cases of mumps were confirmed—yet all of those infected had been fully vaccinated with two documented doses of the MMR shot. What’s going on here? Is the vaccine losing its efficacy—or was it never effective in the first place? Instead of acknowledging the vaccine’s problems, the CDC and mainstream media blame people who don’t vaccinate.
